Me with my father, Richard Pearson

Richard Pearson is a name that most people over the age of 30 in the El Paso region have at least heard. He was either loved or hated by most people for his biting editorials on KVIA and KTSM TV over the years. He loves El Paso and never made a secret of the fact that he is proud to have been born and raised here. He has spent his entire adult life working to make El Paso a great place. I call him Dad.

In 2005, Dad was diagnosed with Parkinson's Disease. In 2006 we noticed that his short-term memory was declining rapidly and he was beginning to show signs of dementia. Now, in 2009, he has been diagnosed with an accelerated form of dementia called Lewy Body Disease in combination with Parkinson’s. The Richard Pearson that we knew only makes rare appearances now. He still has a great sense of humor, but he has trouble remembering that he has 5 children and 6 grandchildren and is unable to remember any of the great things that he did for the people of El Paso.

I am determined to make a difference in the fight against Alzheimer's disease. By participating in the 2009 Alzheimer's Association Memory Walk®, I'm committed to raising awareness and funds for Alzheimer research, care and support. For Dad.

Please join me in the fight against this disease at MEMORY WALK on September 20 at La Vina! If you donate $100, you will receive a Memory Walk t-shirt. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!

Currently more than 5 million Americans have Alzheimer's, and 78 million baby boomers are at risk – unless we find a way to change the course of the disease. We can’t change what has happened to Richard, but maybe we can make a difference for someone else’s dad. Or mom. Or grandmother. Or grandfather. Or sister. Or brother.

I want to do my part to fight this disease, but I need to ask for your support! Please make a donation to help the Alzheimer's Association advance research into prevention, treatments and a cure for Alzheimer's. For the millions already affected by the disease, the Association offers care, education, support and resources in communities nationwide.

On behalf of the millions of Americans who are living with this disease, thank you for supporting my efforts. We're on the MOVE to end Alzheimer’s and all other forms of dementia!
